September is nearing an end and we have yet to see retailers receive stock of the M205 Rose Quartz which was slated for release this month meaning pre-orders remain unfulfilled. It looks like Pelikan has postponed the Rose Quartz until October in order to remediate an undisclosed issue which was discovered late in the game. Sources suggest that mid to late October may be a more realistic timeline which means that the M205 Rose Quartz is going to bump up against the M600 Glauco Cambon and the M600 Red-White. Perhaps news of the next new model out of Hannover might serve as a little salve for that wound but it also adds to the developing glut of fall releases. Pelikan has already delivered the M200 Pastel-Blue this year and the M205 Rose Quartz Special Edition is in the wings which is why yet another release in the Classic line comes as a bit of a surprise, but here we are. News broke today of the upcoming M200 Copper Rose Gold Special Edition. It is understandable if you’re getting Gold-Marbled vibes but there is a little more nuance to be found here. Specifically, the use of rose gold is something that is rarely seen on a Pelikan, but it is not without precedent. The next M200 to grace the Classic line is tentatively penciled in for an October launch and retailers should be taking pre-orders now. Read on to learn all about Pelikan’s newest Classic series fountain pen.
The M200 Copper Rose Gold Special Edition continues the tradition of marbled finishes that Pelikan has really leaned into for their Classic line. The barrel has what appears to be a shimmering, marbled, coppery look. It is easy on the eyes and reminds me of autumn. A dark brown ink view sits just behind the section, blending nicely with its surroundings while still imparting a much-appreciated utility to the pen. The Copper Rose Gold’s cap, section, and piston knob are once again made from white resin which provides a nice contrast against the warm, copper tones. The cap top is also white, featuring the company’s single chick logo. This new model comes with all of the standard furniture of an M200, chiefly a beak clip, a single cap band, a crown clip nut, and a single ring at the piston knob. While most M200s to date have had gold plated trim, this new model will be the first in its line to feature rose gold plating. We have been talking a lot about alloys lately here on The Perch and rose gold is yet another alloy made from a combination of pure gold and copper. The reddish coloring that the copper imparts pairs well with the copper-colored barrel and is wonderfully highlighted when set against the white resin components. Some of you might recall that we previously saw rose gold employed in 2016’s The Statue Of Zeus, the sixth entry in the Seven Wonders Of The World series.

Also plated in rose gold, is the stainless-steel nib which will be available in the widths of EF, F, M, and B. While you can certainly swap in a fancier gold nib from the M400 line, you might want to hold off with this one so as to not deprive yourself of the unique plating that adorns this nib. This special edition will be available as a fountain pen only with no plans for a matching K200 and it will come packaged in Pelikan’s G30 gift box. Domestic pricing is not entirely clear at the moment but US retail for the recent Pastel-Blue was $232 so you can likely expect something in that neighborhood. Overseas vendors are asking anywhere from $129 to $150 depending on where you shop when the VAT is excluded. As always, I would encourage you to try and support your local brick and mortar shops whenever possible, seeing as we’ve already lost far too many.

Since the arrival of COVID, Pelikan has been feeding us new releases in dribs and drabs. Now, in the run up to the last quarter of 2023, we are being provided a plethora of new models to feast on. That’s not necessarily a bad problem to have but I do worry that gorging ourselves may leave us with indigestion so to speak. I certainly do have some misgivings, but none of them relate to the pen itself. I think the Copper Rose Gold is unique and attractive enough to stand on its own and I will certainly be adding this one to my flock. That said, I’m not sure that I’d like to see rose gold on every new model coming out, but it is a refreshing change and a further sign that Pelikan may be getting some of their mojo back. My concerns are twofold. First, this year has been rife with smaller releases, predominantly spanning just two lines, the M2xx and the M6xx. Our only big pens this year were a rehashed M800 and an ultra-limited Raden, out of reach for most. This will certainly come as a disappointment to those who have been patiently waiting for an M8xx or a more attainable M1xxx pen. My second issue is the clustered timeline of releases with four pens now tentatively slated for October. Mr. Postman is going to be busy. This will almost certainly force the budget conscious, which I venture includes most of us, to make some difficult choices. It is a certain person who gravitates to the smaller pens and I’m worried that Pelikan is going to that well a bit too often in such a short interval. Personally, I’m all for more releases but would like to see a more balanced schedule spread out across the different lines. I’m eager to read your thoughts on the new M200 Copper Rose Gold. What are your impressions with regards to the design? Are you planning to add this one to your flock or does Pelikan already have you over extended? I certainly quite like this release and considering adding this to my flock. Josh, I think you’ve nailed it – Pelikan is going the way Sailor is under new ownership with multiple releases that no one can keep up with. It also appears to me that Pelikan’s product development teams is targeting a younger, probably female audience lately with these releases. So I do hope that Pelikan will think about freshening up the M8xx and M1xxx lines.
I’m not even sure that the new owners have taken control yet since the deal wasn’t supposed to be finalized at this point in time. I think what we’re seeing is still being guided by the previous ownership. I have heard some suggest that this is a last love letter to the Asian market which values smaller models. I definitely think that the cluster of October releases is a bit of sabotage but Pelikan doesn’t solicit for my opinion. If it helps, I did hear that an M800 and M1000 were in the pipeline next year.
I think it’s a beautiful pen, but don’t know yet if I will be getting it. I already have the gold marbled, brown marbled. Does this make a set?
It certainly would complement those other models nicely but is unique enough so as not to step on their toes.
Oh.My.Goodness. I’m fanning myself. This pen is gorgeous, it’s right in with my favorite colors (gold, bronze, copper), and I am going to preorder asap. I have become a little selective recently – I had told myself my next Pelikan would be an 800 because I don’t have an 800. But I’m very interested in the red stripe 600, and this one is a MUST HAVE.
I never really thought about copper as something that could be attractive but this one does have a charm to it. Glad this one checks all the boxes for you. Enjoy it!
Wow, so many new releases, so fast…it is going to make for some tough choices. That said, this copper-colored pen is a must have for me—probably multiple copies that will be gifted. I think it will be a nice subtle change-up with the gold marbled. Then all we need is an M205 in silver to complete the gold, silver, and bronze medal set…😃
And that’s what I don’t understand. They are putting customers in a difficult position. This can’t be a good way to optimize sales/revenue. For a company that has been so measured about their releases, something feels off here. I keep imagining the “I Love Lucy” scene where she and Ethel are in the chocolate factory with the conveyor belt going too fast and them not being able to keep up.

Unfortunately, no. Pelikan specifically said that this release will be a fountain pen only and no matching ballpoint.

This will appeal to the gold lovers. With all these new releases, I will hold out for an M800. perhaps similar to the Cambon from art series, but more red and yellow flames and M800 sized. Here’s hoping.
I’m all for red and yellow. I did hear that there is an M800 in the works for next year. We’ll just have to wait and see.
I am considering the rose quartz, the new M600, and now this one! I will probably cut the rose quartz in favor of this one and hope it’s available later. This pen has an ink window I love, with the colored demonstrator effect, unlike the pastel blue, which I really wanted until I saw that clear ink window. I guess I’m lucky that I have tiny hands and can’t use the big pens, but yes, now choices have to be made.
If I had to choose between the Rose Quartz and the Copper Rose Gold, I think that I’d go Copper Rose Gold hands down but both look great and are different enough to not feel redundant. Good luck with choosing.
Certainly the Copper Rose is going on my wish list. I wonder what it would have looked like with a black cap instead of the white? Perhaps their product development team tried it out in both colors and decided the white was more striking.
The combination of copper and white appeals to me more than the red stripes and white of the new M600. Alas, I don’t think I’ll be adding a new pen this year in my favorite size.
Like many others, I pre-ordered the Rose Quartz–but if Pelikan is correcting a quality issue (that’s only a guess), then I am willing to wait. Pelikan quality is worth waiting for.
It was a quality issue from what I hear, one that hopefully won’t delay the release too long.
I’ve got the Cambon on order and that’s the one I am most anticipating…. but two 600s and 2 200s? I’d like to see another 800 series that isn’t a super limited (i.e. super pricey) edition. Perhaps something with a Grand Place vibe to it.. 🙂
I don’t think there will be any releases that don’t feel pricey. That’s just the way things are today. The Cambon is well worth the anticipation from what I’ve seen.

Ciertamente comparto tu opinión en relación a la Copper Rose Gold, aunque no me la quedaría, (salvo que la cambiaras por el premio de la Demostrador de edición especial de cuarzo rosa M205), pues los vivos blancos no son para mí, sin embargo, sí estaría ansioso de ver y adquirir la tinta Edestein Copper Rose Gold, pues me parecería de lo más interesante, si fuera como los colores que evocan la boca de la trompeta que sirve de marco a la pluma.

Gozo del privilegio de tener una M200 (del que no estoy seguro que sea de la serie “M”) Smoky Quartz, que posiblemente la adquirí en el 2,018, con su tinta.
Tengo dos colores favoritos de tinta para escribir, uno es el marrón (en casi todas sus variaciones, desde la época escolar) y el azul-negro que los tengo en: Waterman, Pelikan 4001, Kaweco y Tanzanita de Edestein.
Disfruto la 200 Smoky Quartz con su tinta, aunque hé de ser franco, le cambié el plumín “M” que traía por un 120 “F” (de 1,960, compré 6 por medio dólar cada una en 1,998) más flexible, y que también se comporta muy jugoso como el original, y los M400 y M800.
La tinta Pelikan Brillant-Brawn 4001, la cual utilizo en un Rapidógrafo Kohinoor con un plumín Venus “F” stub (que en su caja dice 35 centavos), que se comporta de una manera fantástica.
Un E-Motion de Faber-Castell “F” con una tinta Hazelnut Brown, también de Faber Castell y una Onore con tinta Cognac Brown ambos también de la casa Faber-Castell.

I think a Copper Rose Gold ink would be absolutely AMAZING. If they did the same shimmering effect that they did with Golden Beryl, I think that would be a home run. I’m note sure anything like that is in the works but if you’re listening Pelikan….
I couldn’t agree with you more about the glut of lower-end pens (if anything Pelikan produces can really be termed lower-end). In my opinion, this is a striking design and makes very good use of the rose-gold accents. I’m put off by two things: the small size of the 200s (yes, why can’t this be an 800?); and the potential staining of the white, something that you’ve talked about before. That being said, this model is perhaps only rivaled by the yellow-green tortoise and, in the 600 range, the red stripe. A matching ink might be an interesting consideration.
I think a matching ink would have been killer. I’m sure that there are a lot of fans out there wishing that this were an M800. While the white resin needs a little more babying, I haven’t really had any issues with it.

I’m not sure to what you’re referring. I have not heard of it being sold out. Where are you seeing that? I was able to place a pre-order without issue. I do know that the ultra limited Maki-e releases can get sold out before release but I have not heard that to be the case with editions like this.
This is beautiful but I will not be adding it to my collection. I am considering the Rose Quartz as I just got a wonderful pink ink (Montblanc pop pink) that would be so nice in that pen. But I’m very selective with my pen purchases and the red M600 is really calling to me. Decisions, decisions!
I’m not familiar with that ink. Will have to look into it. Admittedly, Pelikan’s 4001 Pink and the newer Edelestein Rose Quartz are the only pinks that I’ve seen/used.
I will reinforce/enable/encourage any purchase decisions involving the red/white M600. I find it quite attractive. And have already pre-ordered. My CFO is very sharp and notices immediately when money transfers from our bank account to any shop that sells fine pens, so I made sure to get a special capital appropriation request authorized for both red/white pens as soon as they were announced.
I am currently working on an amendment to get a spending authorization for the Copper Rose Gold as well. 😃
I find it safer to embezzle the funds personally.
M2xx purchases generally fall within my personal authorization threshold, but because of unusually high expenditures in the Writing Instruments account (see your last several blog entries on new releases), I have triggered an audit flag that attracts extra attention.
What I can say is that under current budget conditions, the Dragon Maki-e M1000 is a definite “no”…😛
I’m a sucker for copper. Although I prefer a black combination over the white, the reasonable price for this interesting example may just suffice as an early birthday/Christmas gift to myself.
I’m curious what black would have looked like but I suspect that it may have swallowed up the rose gold and copper tones some. I suspect that the white might set things off a bit more nicely. Pelikan really likes that white resin these days. I wish that they’d explore other colors.

Nice pen, but why so many white pens? I’d like a white pen with black trim (- new “stormtrooper”) and the cafe crème was wonderful. I guess if white and red sells, and this white and copper sells, fine. But not for me. And the new owners need to remember they are competing with vintage Pelikan for customers dollars. I’d buy a vintage 100 or 101 instead of any of these white pens. OTOH, pens like the cafe crème or the 200 petrol blue I’m totally interested in. (I have both of them 🙂)
I think that these releases come from the old owners still. I would love to see another stormtrooper. An M800 stormtrooper would be awesome.

Tan solo el hecho de considerar el comprar un 100 ó 101, me indica que somos contemporáneos, y estoy de acuerdo, sin embargo, hay que atrapar nuevas generaciones como nuevos clientes.
En mi país, Guatemala, solo (algunos) de mis contemporáneos son fanáticos de las plumas fuente, zas y es por eso. De igual manera comparto tu opinión, aunque, no tengo el Café Crème o el 200 Azul Petróleo, pero disfruto de un M800 negro, un M400 negro-verde, el 200 Smokey Quartz, el fantástico Level 5, y varios Pelikano Junior de mis hijos que ahora los hé rellenado del color de la pluma, amarillo y rojo y és por eso mismo que me atrevo a opinar, pues ellos, a pesar de haber conocido las plumas fuente desde niños, ni las usan ni les gustan.
Creo realmente que las casas elaboradoras de plumas fuente, deben de hacer algo drástico para ganarse su confianza.
De la que ando atrás es de una M600 Carey-Marrón, como la de 1,999.

Absolutely right Pablo. If we can’t get the younger generations meaningfully interested, then this hobby won’t go much further. I’ve seen a lot of young people at pen shows so I’m hopeful that there is enough out there to engage them and keep them interested.

Today (3 Nov 2023 – Fountain Pen Day) Yost Appelboom did a live stream and mentioned that these pens would unfortunately be delayed until early 2024 as Pelikan was not satisfied with something in their production.
Yes, sad but true. Best they get it right though and not just push them out. Hopefully it’ll be worth waiting for. Still, I can’t help but think this could have been avoided if they hadn’t rushed so many pens into such a short release time frame.

Totalmente de acuerdo con vos, es fácil de entender cuando una nueva empresa toma las riendas de otra y se dejan llevar por “dar la mejor imagen”, caso que se há visto tanto en la fusión de no solamente de empresas grandes sino de bancos incluso.
La emoción embarga a toda nueva empresa y ¡los directores quieren dar tanto de repente! (supongo que es el caso) y no estamos libres de los errores. Sin embargo, es mejor rectificar antes de meter la pata y de lanzar al mercado algo por lo que serían recordados toda la vida.
Como reza el dicho: “En el camino andamos y somos arrieros”, aprendemos de nuestros errores. Por de pronto seguiré esperando un distribuidor en Guatemala.

Además de conocerlo personalmente me agrada que no haya tomado el “bolígrafo” ubicado al lado de este libro. Un hito más para Pelikan.

It is not yet available from what I understand. Pelikan’s last update simply stated “Spring 2024.”
